The state of Georgia is where the roots of the Wilson family tree first took hold. Our recorded family history begins with Uriah Wilson (1827), and Susan Hallman (1832). Together Uriah Wilson and Susan had six children. William Sank Wilson, one of Uriah and Susan's sons, married Mary Belcher. Both were born and raised in Covington, Newton, Georgia, and they were among the first generation of African Americans to be born free from slavery. Together, the two had 16 children.
During the Great Migration time period, Oliver Wilson Sr (1904–1934), one of William and Mary’s sons, and his wife Larlia (Lottie) Evans (1902-1937), moved to Chicago, IL. This move was emblematic of the broader movement of African Americans seeking better opportunities and escaping the oppressive conditions of the South. Oliver and Lottie’s children, including Oliver Wilson (Uncle June), James Wilson (Uncle James), Willie Wilson (Uncle Willie), and Mary (Aunt Mary/Grandma), carried forward the family’s legacy. They taught the current generation and their own children the importance of loving unconditionally, caring selflessly, and keeping family first. These lessons and the city of Chicago have been the cornerstone of the Wilson family's enduring strength and unity.
